Permethrin-Treated Clothing: Does It Work and Is It Safe?
If you spend any time on a Maine trail between May and November, you have probably done the parking-lot pat-down: tucking your socks over your pant cuffs, checking your ankles, hoping you got back to the car before anything got past the denim. It is a real concern. In 2024 the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Tick Lab processed 4,776 tick submissions from 398 towns across all 16 counties, and 3,650 of those were deer ticks. Of the deer ticks tested, 41.5% carried the bacterium behind Lyme disease.
That is the backdrop for a question a lot of hikers ask once tucking socks stops feeling like enough protection. Does permethrin-treated clothing actually keep ticks off you, and is it safe to wear?
How treated clothing actually works
Permethrin is a synthetic insecticide in the pyrethroid family. When it is bonded to fabric, it does not soak into your skin the way a lotion repellent does. It sits on the fibers and goes to work on ticks that crawl across the cloth, irritating and killing them on contact. The Environmental Protection Agency describes it as a non-systemic repellent meant for clothing and gear, and both the EPA and the federal Centers for Disease Control are blunt on one point: you apply permethrin to fabric only, never to skin. For exposed skin, you reach for a separate repellent labeled for that use.
That distinction matters because it changes how you think about coverage. A skin repellent protects the skin you put it on. Treated clothing protects the skin the cloth covers, and it works by stopping the tick before it ever reaches you.
What the research says about tick protection
The contact effect is striking under lab conditions. In a CDC study (Prose et al., 2018), deer tick nymphs that touched treated fabric for just one minute could not move normally an hour later. None of them. A tick that cannot move normally cannot climb to a feeding spot and cannot bite. Lone star tick nymphs were a little tougher and took closer to two minutes, but the researchers concluded that treated clothing “shows promise to prevent bites by medically important ticks.”
Field results back that up. A randomized controlled trial of 159 outdoor workers in North Carolina, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine in 2014 (Vaughn et al.), put treated uniforms on forestry, parks, and wildlife staff and tracked their bites across two seasons. The control group logged 780 tick bites. The treated group logged 265. In the first year, the treated uniforms cut bites by more than 80%.
That is a meaningful number for anyone who works or plays in the woods. It is not a force field, but cutting your bites by four-fifths changes the odds in a state where the tick lab also found 12% of tested deer ticks carrying the babesiosis parasite and 9.7% carrying anaplasmosis.
Factory-treated versus spray-on: how long does it last?
You can buy clothing that comes treated from the manufacturer, or you can treat your own gear with a spray. The difference shows up in the laundry.
Factory-treated garments are bonded under controlled conditions, and many are rated to stay effective for up to 70 washes, according to University of Florida IFAS Extension. A do-it-yourself spray treatment typically lasts about six washes before it needs reapplying. The CDC notes that treated items keep working after multiple washings and points you to the product label for the specific number, since it varies by product.
Here is the catch worth knowing before you trust a pair of pants for years. Even factory treatment fades with wear. A 2022 follow-up study tracked treated uniforms over a full year of real use. New, unworn pants killed 95% of the ticks placed on them. After 12 months of wearing and washing, only 2 of 12 pairs still killed enough ticks to count as protective, and a third of the participants’ pants had no measurable permethrin left at all. The researchers recommended re-treating or replacing treated clothing once or twice a year to keep the protection real rather than assumed.
Is permethrin-treated clothing safe?
This is usually the part that gives parents pause, and the regulatory answer is reassuring when the clothing is used as directed. The EPA states that factory-treated clothing “is unlikely to pose any significant immediate or long-term hazard to people wearing the clothing,” that permethrin is poorly absorbed through the skin, and that there is “no evidence of reproductive or developmental effects to mother or child” from exposure. UF IFAS Extension echoes that treated clothing is generally considered safe for adults and children alike when used according to the label.
What about the permethrin that does get absorbed? The same 2022 uniform study measured it directly. Workers wearing treated uniforms showed low but measurable absorbed doses, higher than background during active wear, but still within the EPA’s Acceptable Daily Intake. Real exposure, in other words, but inside the lines regulators have drawn.
One genuine warning belongs to cat owners. Wet permethrin is toxic to cats. If you are spraying your own gear, let it dry completely before a cat gets anywhere near it. Once the chemical has bonded to dry fabric, the EPA finds wearing it poses no significant hazard, but that drying window is the moment to keep the cat in another room.
Putting it to use on the Maine and New Hampshire trail
Permethrin is not a fringe recommendation here. The Maine CDC’s own tick-prevention guidance lists treating clothing with permethrin alongside skin repellents like DEET, picaridin, and IR3535. And the agency is not understating the stakes: as of mid-October 2025, Maine had logged 3,569 Lyme cases, 1,255 anaplasmosis cases, and 324 babesiosis cases, with the state warning that counts were on track to break records again.
For practical use, treated socks, pants, and boots cover the zone where ticks actually find you. They tend to climb from leaf litter and grass tips, so your lower legs are the front line on any wooded edge from the Camden Hills to the White Mountains. What it does not replace
Treated clothing is a supplement, not a substitute. It only guards the skin the fabric covers, which is exactly why the EPA tells you to still treat exposed skin with a separate repellent for fuller coverage. The Maine CDC pairs permethrin clothing with two habits that cost nothing: a daily tick check, and tumbling your clothes in a hot dryer for about 15 minutes after you come in, which kills any tick that hitched a ride.
