Vitamin D and Mood: Sorting Signal From Noise

By February in Portland, the sun clears the horizon late and gives up early, and a fair number of people feel it in their mood. It is also the window when blood levels of vitamin D bottom out across northern New England, because the winter sun here sits too low to make much of it. Two things falling together at the same time of year is exactly the kind of pattern that gets oversold. So it is worth asking plainly: does vitamin D actually move mood, or does it just keep the same calendar as the blues?

The association is real. The cause is not settled.

Population studies have found the link for years. A 2013 systematic review and meta-analysis in The British Journal of Psychiatry pooled the data and found that people with the lowest vitamin D levels carried more depression than those with the highest, across both snapshot surveys and studies that followed people over time. That is a consistent signal, not a fluke.

Consistent is not the same as causal. The same researchers were blunt about a problem they could not rule out: reverse causation. Depression tends to keep people indoors and off their feet, and less time outside means less sun and lower vitamin D. So the low level might be a footprint of the mood, not the source of it. Observational studies like these, the authors noted, give weaker evidence than a randomized trial. Sunlight, exercise, and the season itself all tug on both numbers at once.

What happened when researchers tested it head-on

To untangle cause from coincidence, you randomize people and wait. The largest test of that kind, the VITAL-DEP trial published in JAMA in 2020, followed more than 18,000 older adults for a median of about five years. Half took 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 a day, half a placebo. For preventing depression, the supplement did nothing measurable. The risk of becoming depressed was essentially identical between groups, and the difference in mood scores rounded to zero. The authors put it flatly: the findings do not support using vitamin D3 to prevent depression in adults.

That result deserves to land. For a healthy person hoping a daily capsule will keep winter low moods away, the strongest evidence we have says it probably will not.

Where it did help: people already diagnosed

The picture shifts for those already living with depression. A 2026 dose-response meta-analysis in Frontiers in Nutrition pooled 15 randomized trials of roughly 960 people, all diagnosed by validated criteria, and found vitamin D did improve their depressive symptoms when added to care. The effect was meaningful. The authors called it a promising add-on, not a cure.

Read the fine print, though. The studies disagreed with each other a lot (the heterogeneity was high), and the benefit tracked with a particular intake level rather than any dose doing the same thing. That is the profile of a contributor, one piece among several, not a standalone fix. Prevention and treatment are different questions, and the answers point in different directions.

The honest bottom line for a northern winter

Vitamin D is biologically plausible here. The National Institute of Mental Health notes that people with winter-pattern seasonal affective disorder run low on serotonin, and vitamin D is thought to help serotonin activity, the same chemistry the season disrupts. SAD itself is far more common this far north. The classic four-latitude survey clocked winter SAD at 9.7 percent in Nashua, New Hampshire, against 1.4 percent in Sarasota, Florida, and NIMH says New Englanders are likelier to develop it than people in Texas or Florida.

Plausible is not proven. For seasonal depression, NIMH and the American Family Physician guidance still put light therapy, talk therapy, and antidepressants ahead of vitamin D, whose results for SAD remain mixed. A blood test and a conversation with your own clinician beat guessing. Low vitamin D is worth knowing about and correcting on its own merits. Just don’t expect it to carry your whole winter.
